The Lincoln Dilemma

Almost two years ago Blue and I fell in love with the name Lincoln for our first baby boy.  We’ve wavered and changed girl’s names a million times but we’ve never steered away from Linc for our baby boy.

Sounds great right?  We most likely have a kid with a wiener growing in there so just name him Lincoln and move on.  Not so fast, the cruelty of IF continues…

A family friend in another state just had a son and named him Lincoln.  If we had gotten pregnant just a few months earlier we would have announced our son’s name first because they waited until their son was born.

Everyone else says just name him the same thing, but I can’t seem to get over it so now I’m stuck and Blue and I can’t seem to agree on any other names.

I know it’s petty.  I know that I’m pregnant and I should just be happy that I’m the lucky bitch that got the happily ever after, but couldn’t I just get a break?

  1. one more thing IF'ers miss out on sometimes...first names. I agree, if you love it, use it! Plus, they live in a different state! It's not like they are in your core social grouping...

  2. I can completely relate! If you remember DH's cousin announced the name of their baby, Aubrey, which is one we've had picked out since 2007, at least a full year before we got married/started TTC. While we don't see the family members often (haven't since our wedding day) it just doesn't feel right to me to use it still. For me if it's a family member or a friend that I have some sort of closeness with then I'll pick a new one (we all know how infertiles get the shaft on everything, I'd hate for a fertile to get mad because I "stole" her name), but it depends on how close you are. If this is someone you see every few years or is just another family member's knitting buddy then stick with Lincoln! Maybe even mention it to her that it's the name you like and tell her you still plan on naming your baby that? Either way, it definitely sucks. Good luck!

  3. That stinks but I completely agree with "M". Lincoln was and is the name YOU two picked out. It doesnt matter who else picked out that name, and chances are in the future you'll run into more Lincolns out there in the world. I'd hate to see you give up that name due to a family friend with that name. It's the name you love and chose and I hope you use it! :)

  4. I completely understand your feeling. The exact same thing happened with us with girls names, Except it was a close friend who lives nearby. Hugs hon, boys names are so hard xx

  5. Aww darn!! I've had people "steal" my names too :-( It really does suck. I hope you either decide to still keep it or find something else perfect <3

  6. That stinks and it's a hard situation to be in for sure. If you can't find any other names you love, USE IT!! :)

  7. They STOLE your baby name???? What the hell! Let me at them - I'll cut them!

Or, you know, whatever approrpriate reaction would make you feel better.

    Bastards.

For the record - I think you should let me name your child. I'm pretty sure Dawn is having a girl, so then I get one of each. Works for me!

  9. I think that if you and blue still love the name Lincoln, the you should just go for it! You had it in mind first and we all know we can't control fertility! Also, if they don't live near you and you are not that close to them then do it. In the end, go with your gut! If you love Lincoln, name him that or maybe you will find something else you like more in the mean time!? I'm finding baby names kind of tricky! I just want it to be "the" one, you know??
